Today let’s conclude talking Classic Movie Child Star – Shirley Temple. Only two movies were accredited to Temple in 1939, The Little Princess and Susannah of the Mounties. The film featured for today will be The Little Princess, Temple's first Technicolor triumph and hailed as her greatest motion picture. Produced by Darryl F. Zanuck, the movie includes a magnificent cast headed by Shirley Temple, Richard Greene, Anita Louise, Ian Hunter, Cesar Romero, Arthur Treacher, Mary Nash, Sybil Jason, and Marcia Mae Jones.

The Little Princess is set in England ruled by Queen Victoria. Sara Crewe (Temple) is a little girl who doesn’t have anything in the world but her father, Captain Reginald Crewe (Hunter). When her father goes off to fight in the Boer War for the British Army, young Sara is placed into the care of Amanda Minchin (Nash), the head of an exclusive private school for girls. Now being the favored girl by Miss Minchin, Sara takes the place of Lavinia (Jones) at the meal table to sit next to Miss Minchin. Lavinia becomes jealous and especially cruel to Sara throughout The Little Princess. Sara soon makes friends with a kindly young teacher, called Rose (Louise), with the horse instructor Geoffrey Hamilton (Greene), and with Miss Minchin’s brother, Bertie Minchin (Treacher). Sara lives a wonderful life of a privileged child and is quite happy in her surroundings.

When Captain Crewe is listed as missing in action however, Sara’s life goes from one of plenty to that of a poor house maid. Miss Minchin agrees to keep her on at the school, but in the absence of her tuition payments, she has to work for her keep. Sara is taken from her beautiful, warm room and is made to stay in a dark and creepy attic. She is soon cleaning out the fireplace and scrubbing floors as a servant for all her friends. Sara is dubbed “the little princess” by her former schoolmates. Though Sara is devastated by all the changes, she makes friends with a nice Indian servant, Ram Dass (Romero) from the house next door and with the other servant girl, Becky (Jason). She also refuses to accept that her father is dead and searches the hospitals in the hope of locating him. Sara meets Queen Victoria in the hospital, who assists her in her quest.
